Smoking Risks
At one time it was considered cool to smoke, especially when we could see the handsome Marlboro man on billboards everywhere with a cigarette dangling from his lips. But today, things have changed with more and more health risks of smoking increasing.
Lung cancer, coughing, colored phlegm, and dying—these are things that have changed smoking habits. Smoking risks have changed not only our lives but also the world, with risks of smoking on every package of cigarettes sold. At one time the warnings by the surgeon general were unheard of, and lung cancer was not seriously connected with cigarettes. How could it be, when cigarettes were cool? Jimmy Dean made his mark in Hollywood with that cool “cigarette” look of a dangling cigarette just like the famous Marlboro man. But over the years with more and more research on lung cancer, eventually the health risks of smoking became a proven thing.
Another serious health risk of smoking is second hand smoking health risks, so whether a person smokes or not is still not a safe way to protect from lung cancer. Another name for second hand smoke is environmental tobacco smoke, or ETS, which is usually more dangerous to children than adults. This is due to the fact their breathing is faster than that of an adult, but they are still developing physically which causes the body to become damaged easier. What is not known by smokers, especially those who smoke with children in the home, is that a main ingredient of cigarette smoke is hydrogen cyanide. With each inhale, the smoker puts the same chemical in their lungs that was used as a genocidal agent in WWII.
Some researchers have found cancer causing chemicals in children’s or baby’s urine who have been raised in homes with ETS. This in turn has the ability to cause more built up mucus in sick children, especially in the middle ear that causes more ear infections than in children who are raised in smoke-free environments. Ear infections in children have been increasing in numbers over the years, with less children responding to antibiotics due to over-dosing over the years of the medicine.
