Breastfeeding In Public

Breastfeeding in public has become much more common in today's more open society. With more working mother's, it's become something that you see in restaurants, parks, and other public areas. But for some women, breast feeding in public is not a natural act that needs to be displayed in front of others. Many people feel uncomfortable with public breast feeding and want it banned.

Public breastfeeding is often more offensive to moms that don't breastfeed than to others in the general population. The reason for this is unclear, but people against breast feeding in public simply feel that it is something that makes others uncomfortable and unable to enjoy their time. Anti public breastfeeding groups have been started and there is even talk of create a law against breastfeeding in public. In some areas of the country, there is already a law for breast feeding in public because of all the hoopla that has taken place in the past few years.

In papers, you can sometimes find public breastfeeding photos to accompany stories that speak against the practice. These public breastfeeding pictures seem to be used as fuel for the fires of the debate, causing other parents to wonder if they should be keeping their breastfeeding private, lest they become someone in the pictures as well. But the fact of the matter is that breast feeding your child in public is not a crime in most places. And for that, mothers that choose to do so should not be punished.

Instead of focusing on banning or legalizing breast feeding in public, we might want to focus more on ways to get past this public breast feeding taboo. Perhaps there can be certain areas where mothers can nurse their children or even special rules against breastfeeding your toddler in public as that seems to be the most criticized practice. There are also a number of shirts and blankets that can be used to help hide the nursing mother and child in order to keep everyone around them more comfortable in the public place.

But in the end, breastfeeding is a completely natural and healthy way to raise a child in this world. If it should make others uncomfortable, there's no reason why you can't try to stay out of sight for the duration of the nursing. When there's no possible way to stay out of the way of others, nursing moms should not feel bad for feeding their child.
